Reflection: Week 1

Week 1

Mon 21
Had our first Stage 2 Meeting today, got to meet all the Second Year Lecturers and find out about all the new modules we would be doing this year. Was very interested to hear about the Typography and Branding modules and they were topics we got a little experience with, in the first year. Am excited to learn more about them. For activity 1, I looked at the Designers: Piet Zwart, Emil Ruder, and Barry Deck as they were people I didn't know and were interested to learn about.

Tues 22
Participated in the 'content' workshop today where we were looking at the ideas of 'content and hierarchy'. I enjoyed learning how to find which pieces of information which could be labeled as primary, secondary, or tertiary elements. As well as creating a large variety of poster layouts for the horror film festival - it made me realise that it's quite easy to create many different designs if you don't focus on just one piece that you think is important.

Wed 23
Today I booked a space in the studio so that I could start on activity 4: the poster design. I had chosen the design Barry Deck because I really liked the variety of type families he had created. This would also allow me to play around a lot with the overall design of the poster since I wanted to find the best way to express his work. I was able to create quite a few poster layouts that I thought would encapsulate Barry Deck's style especially since his style varies from simple to sometimes very chaotic.

Thurs 24
Had my first Textwork lecture-discussion and seminar today. We were mainly discussing the topic of graphic design and consumerism. It was interesting to learn about the many links between Graphic Design and Consumerism.

Fri 25
I submitted my poster on Barry Deck this morning. Was very happy with the outcome despite all the trouble with choosing the main colour for the poster. The overall poster was busy with the inspired design of his typography style whilst not being filled with text, it expressed who he was and his style
